SHILLONG, Oct 22: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Laban Circle has issued a circular urging the public to refrain from bursting firecrackers in public places and public thoroughfares.
“Through this circular on account of Diwali celebration on October 24, we would like to urge the public at large to refrain from bursting firecrackers in public places and public thoroughfare,” read the statement issued by the environment secretary of the KSU’s Laban Circle.
According to the KSU, excessive use of firecrackers and others have had significant affect on the air quality and the environment as a whole thereby having detrimental effect on public health and safety.
Recalling the order of the East Khasi Hills District deputy commissioner permitting bursting of crackers from 8 pm to 10 pm, the KSU unit said: “The union strongly acclaims that the public follows it strongly and as given within the stipulated time period of 8 pm to 10 pm on October 24 without fail.”
