SHILLONG, Oct 24: Former FKJGP president Wellbirth Rani, who recently joined the United Democratic Party (UDP), on Monday announced that he will not contest the 2023 Assembly elections from Mawphlang constituency.
Rani, who at present is the vice president of UDP East Khasi Hills, also informed that his decision will not impact his relations with the party, and he will continue to remain with the UDP.
“I will continue to work to strengthen the party,” Rani said.
Earlier, there were reports that Rani might contest the 2023 elections if the sitting Mawphlang MLA of UDP Eugeneson Lyngdoh decides to not do the same.
It may be mentioned that the top leadership of UDP had approached People’s Democratic Front (PDF) general secretary Auspicious Lyngdoh to contest the elections on a UDP ticket from Mawphlang constituency.
Earlier in August, PDF president Gavin Miguel Mylliem had already announced that the party will field Auspicious from Mawphlang constituency.
However, according to sources, Auspicious is yet to accept the offer made by the UDP.
As it stands at present, the UDP is yet to field a candidate from Mawphlang in case the sitting MLA decides not to contest the Assembly elections.
