SHILLONG, Oct 31: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday said it is a narrow perspective to always eye a government job.
“Government jobs are there and of course, they (vacant posts) need to be filled up. The recruitment process in all departments is going on even as we speak but things will take time,” Sangma told reporters.
He highlighted the difficulties faced by the government during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Talking about the posts of contractual teachers, he said 1,000 teachers were appointed on permanent basis against these casual posts but some, who failed to grab the opportunity when these posts were regularised, made it an issue.
The CM said the focus must not be only on one sector during the creation of jobs.
“I have explained how we came up with a specific policy for start-ups in the entrepreneurship sector. This itself is a policy for addressing unemployment,” he said.
He underlined the government’s different programmes including milk mission and piggery mission in the farming sector.
“We created 40,000 women groups having members of more than four lakh and gave financial support to them. This is one such policy to address unemployment among women,” Sangma said.
On the tourism sector, he said the government has come up with a policy on how it should go about with infrastructure development in important locations.
He said the government has also come up with homestay and vehicles programmes to support the youth, stating that this will help them to become travel agents and provide taxi service.
“These are tourism-related policies,” the CM said, adding that the efforts are being made precisely with the objective of providing jobs and addressing the problem of unemployment.
He said 2,000 new entrepreneurs have received support from the government.
“Over 20,000 different producers’ groups have been formed to ensure that different support is given to them through agriculture. Funds are given to them,” the CM said.
He further said the government has formed a large number of cooperative societies and they will get training on food processing, packaging and marketing their products outside.
