SHILLONG, Nov 7: As the North East Olympic Games gets under way in the state, the horrid condition of roads in parts of Shillong, especially Mawlai is getting on the nerves of local legislator PT Sawkmie, who is miffed with the state government.
Athletes from across the Northeastern region are in the city for the mega event.
Sawkmie lamented that Shillong is welcoming guests with such horrible roads. He pointed out that the condition of the road from Mawlai petrol pump till Mawroh is bad, but athletes must travel via there to eventually arrive at the NEHU and Polo where the events are being held. “It is said all the athletes, officials and VIPs would be passing through these road which goes to NEHU and even Polo ground,” he said. Maintaining that the government should have prepared well for the mega event, he termed the bad condition of the road in Mawlai as a failure of the Public Works Department (PWD).
Stating that this would dent the image of the state, Sawkmie said all sportspersons and guests would surely talk about the bad condition of roads in the capital city which is hosting the Games.
“I have discussed the matter with the PWD more than 100 times. Even though engineers are trying their best, it is the contractors who never do their work as they have the blessings of the minister,” Sawkmie added.
It may be noted that the road in Mawlai is in bad shape for a long time; it started since since the work of laying pipes for the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme began.
Besides the road in Mawlai area, the condition of many others in Shillong has also deteriorated with there being no attempts so far to repair the roads.
