Army man from Shillong dies after drowning in Uttarakhand
SHILLONG, Nov 11: A 33-year-old Army man from Shillong was recently killed after drowning in Alaknanda river in Uttarakhand. Havildar Major Priyotosh Deb of 196 Fd Workshop Coy (Mountain Brigade) was serving in Uttarakhand when the tragedy came to pass on October 28 afternoon, following which the family immediately rushed to Uttarakhand. Later, the mortal remains of the Havildar Major Deb were brought to Shillong and cremated. While people from all walks of life paid last respect to the departed soul, VeerNari Shakti Resettlement Foundation said that Havildar Major Deb, who was a brave soldier from Shillong, was admired by his regiment. Havildar Major Deb’s sister Beauty Dey informed that after the passing away of his brother, who was serving in Meghalaya Police 12-13 years ago, Priyotosh decided to join the army.
2-day cultural festival next week
SHILLONG, Nov 11: The Seng Khasi Kmie will organise a two-day festival ‘Hynniewtrep Hynniewskum’ at Weiking ground on November 19 and 20. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Seng Khasi Kmie Mawkhar cultural secretary Hamar Sing Kharpa informed that the main attraction of the festival will be the performance of various traditional dances and songs by groups from Khasi and Jaintia Hills. “There will also be a traditional attire fashion competition titled ‘Nai Khatsaw Synnai’ and ‘Lukhimai’,” he said, adding that performance of traditional whistle song by people of Kongthong village and screening of a short film ‘ka Thymmei, ka Tynre, ka Tyllong’ are other highlights of the festival. Urging the locals to be part of the two-day festival, Kharpa also informed that 14 groups from different villages will participate in the event.
Schemes, projects for Mawkyrwat
MAWKYRWAT, Nov 11: PHE Minister and Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L Tongkhar on Friday released a slew of schemes and projects worth Rs 3.39 crore for his constituency. Addressing a gathering during a meeting in Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills, Tongkhar called upon all concerned to ensure that quality of work carried out under the projects is not compromised. Some of the projects that were announced include construction of dorbar hall, public toilets, motorable roads, playgrounds, parking spaces, retaining walls, fencing, school buildings, footpaths, ponds, etc. During the meeting, Tongkhar also assured that he will try to expedite the work for the release of MLA scheme for 2022-23, which, he said, could be possible by last week of November or first week of December.
IIM Shillong’s conference ends
SHILLONG, Nov 11: SUSCON, an international conference on sustainability by IIM Shillong, recently concluded here with discussions and debates on sustainability at local, national, and international scales. According to a statement, this year’s conference was thematised on ‘Collaboration, Compassion and Co-Creation’ and was attended by distinguished speakers from India who shared their knowledge, experiences and insights presenting their thoughts on this theme over three days. “Approximately 150 papers were received, out of which 41 papers were chosen during the conference,” the statement said.
