SHILLONG, Dec 3: Will Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma contest only from South Tura or will he pick a second seat? Reports on the same are speculative as of now but not entirely improbable, or at least this is what the CM himself said.
“I have been very clear that I am contesting from South Tura which is my constituency. There is no question of me changing South Tura as such. Anything else will depend on the party,” he said on Saturday when asked if there he was eyeing any other constituency, in addition to South Tura.
“If the party leaders or party workers have something to say and if this is what I have to do then we can think about it at a later stage,” he said.
There have been unconfirmed reports that Sangma is looking to contest from one more constituency apart from South Tura. Party sources from Garo Hills had, earlier, mentioned that Selsella is considered a safe seat for Conrad Sangma and his family.
NPP’s sitting legislator from Selsella, Ferlin CA Sangma had recently tendered her resignation as MLA with party colleague and Raksamgre legislator Benedic Marak. Both are set to join the BJP ahead of the elections and contest from the saffron party.
The NPP leadership justified Benedic’ resignation as an outcome of his removal from the post of CEM of the GHADC but they were mum on Ferlin’s resignation, leading to conjectures that the seat was being vacated for the chief minister.
It may be recalled that following the release of BJP state vice president Bernard N Marak from jail on bail, party state president Ernest Mawrie had dared the CM to contest from South Tura.
He had further challenged the CM to fight only from the South Tura seat and not hedge his career by fighting on two seats, and face the might of Bernard in his own backyard.
