SHILLONG, Dec 10: Deputy Chief Minister and Pynursula MLA Prestone Tynsong on Saturday asserted that Sohra and Pynursla subdivisions cannot be combined as a district.
“I made it very clear that we have no objection if Sohra becomes a district, but we cannot club it with Pynursla subdivision,” he said, adding that he is happy with Pynursla as a sub-division.
He was replying to a query on whether some parts of Pynursla would be included in the Sohra district.
He said there were some issues with Pynursla and Sohra subdivisions in 2021. “The problem is from the people of Pynursla subdivision. They said no to combining their subdivision with Sohra for a new district,” he added.
The state government has been examining the demand for the creation of Sohra district.
Earlier, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the government needs to look into many demands of different districts, blocks and subdivisions. But he had pointed out that there has to be some sense of agreement to ensure that complications do not arise.
He also said Mairang district was successfully created after reaching a consensus.
“We found that in other demands for subdivisions or blocks or districts, there were certain areas where the overall consensus could not be built because there were differences among the villages, which led to complications,” Sangma had said, assuring that the process to create Sohra district is on.
There have been indications that Sohra, the oldest sub-division established in 1982, might be upgraded to a district before Christmas.
Sangma had also assured a delegation of the Sohra District Demand Forum that the state government would entrust Chief Secretary DP Wahlang with examining the issue.
