SHILLONG, Dec 29: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Thursday asked the state government to write to the Union Home Ministry to ensure that the interest of the Christian community is protected in the country.
The VPP’s demand comes in view of a controversial letter issued in Assam seeking key information on religious conversion and numbers of churches in the state.
VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh expressed surprise that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had disassociated himself from the letter.
“How can the head of the state say that he does not know anything? It is a matter of concern that such things are happening under his administration without his knowledge,” Myrboh pointed out.
“We feel that it is an intimidation to the Christian community. We are concerned about this development which took place in Assam,” the VPP leader added.
The VPP spokesperson further observed that the Assam CM was to trying to douse the tension since the BJP has projected him as the leader of the entire Northeastern region.
The VPP leader said that the controversy erupting over the letter would affect the saffron party especially in the Christian majority states of Meghalaya and Nagaland where elections are due.
