SHILLONG, Jan 10: After a barrage of criticisms surrounded NPP supremo Conrad Sangma, his party on Tuesday finally spoken in his defence, asserting that Conrad has proved his mettle and will successfully defend his bastion South Tura unbothered by the noise.
“The Chief Minister is not panicking. He is doing all the right things in Garo Hills. He has done a very good job in the past five years though we were disturbed by COVID but despite the challenges we have seen a lot of development here. Even in Tura, people are very happy and they stand decided to vote for the CM and NPP,” NPP spokesperson and Williamnagar MLA, Marcuise N Marak, said on Tuesday.
Countering the statement of UDP candidate from South Tura, John Leslee K Sangma, who alleged that the CM was panicking, Marak said, “…those that are (panicking), are trying to create such nuisance”.
John Leslee Sangma will take on Conrad and others for South Tura seat in the upcoming Assembly polls.
On claims of State BJP vice president Bernard Marak that the CM had won the 2018 Assembly elections due to the BJP’s support, the NPP spokesperson said, “That is his claim. Anybody can (make) claim but you know the way he (CM) has performed.”
Marak said Conrad has proved his credibility in different roles even as a Parliamentarian. Conrad an ideal leader to become CM, he said
“There is no question of him depending on others,” he added.
In yet another counter to the challenge posed by others against Conrad in his bastion, Marak said, “Move around Tura, and ask the people they are all ready to vote for him”.
South Tura is one of the constituencies which will host a heated battle. The NPP represented by CM will take on MDA coalition partners BJP and UDP, while the TMC is also fielding a youth leader of repute beside few others that may enter the fray in due course of time.
