SHILLONG, Jan 10: Congress may seem to be down and out at the moment, but the grand-old party is optimistic about bouncing back in the upcoming elections. To inject vigour into the disintegrated Congress, party’s top leaders are scheduled to make a beeline to Meghalaya just ahead of the Assembly polls.
Senior observer of the Congress for Meghalaya, Mukul Wasnik is set to visit Shillong later this week.
During his visit, he will hold a series of discussions and also also deliberate over finalising the list of candidates for polls.
Moreover, observers Benny Behnan and JD Seelam are also arriving in Shillong on Wednesday. The screening committee for Meghalaya which is headed by MP Gaurav Gogoi and his team will also visit Shillong next week. Meanwhile, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president, Deborah Marak, who welcomed the relative of former Cabinet Minister Clement Marak, Reynold M Sangma, in the party office here, said Sangma wants to contest the elections from Selsella constituency on a Congress ticket.
Steering clear of divulging the party’s strategy for polls, Marak said that the party is already in combat-mode. The party has sent the list of aspiring candidates to the AICC headquarters for approval of the names, she said.
“Though we have new faces but they are well qualified and they understand politics,” Marak said.
Stating that the people have had their fill of scams and corruption in the state, the MPCC working president said the Congress will fight against corruption.
