2 drug peddlers arrested in Ri Bhoi with heroin

Nongpoh, Jan 19: Ri Bhoi district police in Meghalaya arrested two high-profile drug traffickers who are actively involved in inter-state drug smuggling.

Ribhoi ANTF on Wednesday swung into action based on a tip-off that two drug peddlers are transporting illegal contraband from Manipur to Shillong via Assam.

With constant field inputs and surveillance, the suspects were finally intercepted in Byrnihat at 5 pm. Later, a search was conducted in the presence of an independent witness, and 20 soap boxes containing heroin with an estimated international market value of Rs 1.2 crores were recovered.

A preliminary test conducted on-the-spot showed positive for presence of heroin. In this connection, two persons namely, Abigail Vanpari Vanchhawng of Nongrim Hills, Shillong, and Rintu Chanshyam Saikia (30) from Chincholoi Bunder Road, Malad West, Mumbai, Maharashtra were arrested and a case under the NDPS Act has been registered at Nongpoh PS a.
