SHILLONG, Jan 22: The BJP state election committee will be meeting in Tura on Wednesday to discuss the party candidates for the upcoming Assembly polls.
BJP state president, Ernest Mawrie told The Shillong Times that the party will finalise its candidates after the meeting in Tura.
The party intends to contest all the 60 constituencies, he said. “At the moment, we have got candidates for more than 55 seats. I am confident we are going to get candidates for the remaining seats,” he said.
The party reportedly has more than one candidate in a few seats. One such constituency is North Shillong, which is witnessing a tussle between aspirants Mariahom Kharkrang and Michael Kharsyntiew.
Kharsyntiew, claiming the support of former MDC Martamlim Pyrbot, said he was confident of getting the party ticket. “My confidence comes from my BJP membership for eight years. I will discuss with my supporters if I fail to get the ticket,” he said, adding that the party’s central leadership in Delhi will take the final call on the ticket allotment.
Kharkrang was not available for comment.
Earlier, Mawrie said tickets will be allotted to the right persons at the right time as decided by the 11-member parliamentary committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
