Panel to monitor affairs of jails in Assam

Guwahati, Feb 8:  Assam home and political department has constituted a committee to monitor the affairs of all central and district jails in Assam.

The committee comprises the deputy inspector general (DIG) of prisons (range) Guwahati; the deputy inspector general (DIG) of prisons (range) Jorhat and the member secretary, Assam State Legal Service Authority, as members.

The committee shall visit each jail of the state and submit a report on the capacity of the jail; total inmates with bifurcation of male and female; whether legal aid clinic exists in the jail or not; whether the facility of appropriate kitchen food is available or not; whether proper sanitation is preserved and maintained on the jail campus or not and whether the provision of bunk beds in all the wards of the jail exists or not.

The committee shall take all necessary steps, including applying for speedy trial of the jail inmates, to ease out the population and congestion in the jails.

“Further, it shall consider any other aspect which may come to its notice during the visit. After the visit, the committee shall submit a separate report jail wise to the Gauhati High Court,” an official statement said on Wednesday.
