SHILLONG, Feb 10: The candidates of East Shillong constituency, barring NPP’s Ampareen Lyngdoh and BJP’s Wankitbok Pohshna, on Friday shared a platform and put forward their visions and priorities if they are elected as an MLA.
The East Shillong candidates — Congress’ Manuel Bardwar, VPP’s Avner Pariat, KAM Meghalaya’s Wanpynhun Kharsyntiew, TMC’s Ajay Nongrum and PDF’s Romeo Phira Rani — revealed their vision as an elected MLA during the common platform organised by Seng Samla Laitumkhrah Pyllun at the Police Point in the city.
During the programme, most of the candidates spoke on the need of a corruption-free government, revamp of the educational sector and improvement of the civic amenities in the constituency.
The candidates also highlighted the need to address the problem of unemployment among the youths, to ensure quality healthcare, uninterrupted water and power supply for the people of the constituency.
In his address, Badwar stressed on the need to bring back the lost glory of Laitumkhrah of being an “education hub” of not only the state but of the entire region.
Stating that the constituency has not seen any change in the past 15 to 17 years, he said that the only change which can be noticed is the emergence of tall and new buildings in the constituency.
“My intention to contest the ensuing Assembly polls was to transform and bring about positive changes in the constituency,” the Congress candidate said.
Meanwhile, the VPP candidate said his top priority for contesting the elections was to fight against corruption and to back the installation of a corruption-free government.
According to him, the people of the state have suffered severely due to corruption and irregularities under the current government.
“The people who are involved in various scams and alleged corruption should be punished as per the law. This will act as a deterrent,” Pariat said.
He further informed that the party will soon release its manifesto which will include framing of policy for the interest of the farmers, education sector, addressing the problem of unemployment, etc.
Meanwhile, both KAM Meghalaya candidate and AITC candidate stressed on the need to have a corruption-free government and also to make East Shillong a corruption-free constituency in the state and country as whole.
