SHILLONG, Feb 17: In the wake of a woman filing a police complaint against NPP’s West Shillong candidate Mohendro Rapsang, the party on Friday rejected the complainant’s allegations, and said that attempts are being made to malign the name of Rapsang.
It may be mentioned that one A Sohtun, a resident of Mawbah Lumphyrnai, on Thursday filed a police complaint against the former legislator for allegedly visiting her house in an inebriated state and threatening her husband, who is a member of the UDP.
In her complaint, she said, “I want to inform you that the ex-MLA Mohendro Rapsang, along with his people or so-called gangsters, came to my residence at around 11.30 pm and tried to forcefully enter my home to search for my husband (Droshing Lyngdoh) as he is the member of the UDP unit, and threatened to kill him and along using abusive language to show his power along with his people.”
A day later, the NPP West Shillong Block condemned the move, saying that the accusations hold no basis and are just an attempt to malign its candidate’s name.
“The truth is all the unrest started due to a group of people who are from the UDP. Their obvious trademark bullying apparently never stops and likewise even on this day they were threatening the public who came to a meeting that was held on the 15 February, 2023. After clear understanding and research about the incident, it is learnt that one Droshing Lyngdoh is behind this malicious act and their plan was not to stop at this but to also cause harm and injury to the members of the NPP on the same evening at 11 pm,” the NPP said, adding that Rapsang, after becoming aware of the incident, immediately rushed to the spot.
The NPP also alleged that a crowd of 30 to 40 people, who are not from the constituency, started chaos with an intention of causing physical harm.
It was also informed by the party that Rapsang, in order to stop the situation from escalating further, immediately informed the Dorbar Shnong.
“Sohtun’s accusations that there was a threat to destroy her house is just a desperate attempt for political gains which is covered and painted with lies only to cover up her husband, who we now know is Droshing, the man who led the group on that particular incident,” the NPP said.
Meanwhile, the party has also asked one and all to remain alert and pay no heed to false rumours, which are being made to cause unrest among people.
The NPP also maintained that even during 2013 and 2018 Assembly elections, similar attempts were made when petrol bombs were hurled at the houses of Rapsang’s supporters and members.
“In 2018, the UDP members even burned Mr Rapsang’s car,” the party said.
Attempts to contact UDP working president and West Shillong candidate Paul Lyngdoh failed as his mobile phone was switched off.
