SHILLONG, Feb 23: The TMC on Thursday vehemently countered the allegations of being a “violent party” by stating it was a “Goebbels’ doctrine” adopted by its opponents.
Paul Joseph Goebbels was a German Nazi politician in-charge of propaganda.
Stating that the TMC is the only party which is fighting the BJP tooth and nail, TMC parliamentarian Mahua Moitra reminded how she stands alone against the 300-odd BJP members in Parliament and gives it back better than what she gets.
Reminding of Goebbels, she said if one repeats a lie long enough it becomes the truth and this is something those opposed to the TMC have always resorted to.
Reminding that the TMC came to power because the people elected them, she said that if indeed they have such a history of violence, then how did the TMC manage to win elections in 2011, 2016 and 2021 when the BJP has been in power at the Centre since 2014.
She further said that after the polls in West Bengal, the BJP went to the court and pleaded that hundreds of people were raped and murdered but till date they have not been able to arrest any leader or supporter despite being in power at the Centre and having their “machineries” working overnight.
She asserted that the TMC is running a peaceful government in Bengal and declared Kolkata as the safest city in the country for women.
On NPP blaming the TMC for the recent violence in Umroi constituency, she said, “I am unable to understand this — if the family of TMC workers is at home and somebody is playing loud music, the police is called but nobody comes, lady goes out and she is manhandled, how is this TMC’s way of doing things.”
Pointing out that the NPP is in the government and controls law and order in the state, Moitra said, “It is the TMC that is fighting the elections here, their eldership and workers are being harassed and attacked and I don’t see how the fault lies with the TMC. It clearly lies with the law and order and the cadre of the NPP who are indulging in this.”
Meanwhile, TMC State president, Charles Pyngrope said, “One must not forget the victim is the wife of a sitting legislator. This is a law-and-order issue when a family of a member is attacked; forget being wife of a legislator; even for an ordinary woman also you cannot categorise TMC or NPP.”
“One must go down to what actually happened and catch the culprit. The district administration should have been immediately on the job,” Pyngrope stated.
