UDP seeks extension of CUET exemption for M’laya by a year
SHILLONG, March 6: UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh on Monday sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend the exemption of the CUET-UG for one more academic year (2023-2024). Mawthoh said the CUET-UG (Common University Entrance Test for Undergraduate) has been implemented as an admission test in affiliated colleges of central universities since 2022 but Meghalaya and other Northeastern states were exempted from the purview of the CUET-UG last year. According to him, CUET-UG will be implemented this year by NEHU in all its affiliated colleges. Students from Meghalaya, especially those from the rural areas, are either unaware of the exams or find it extremely difficult to register and prepare for the CUET-UG. “Hence I would like to request the Chief Minister to implore upon the Prime Minister to kindly extend the exemption from CUET-UG for one more academic year (2023-2024),” the UP general secretary said, while pointing out that the last date for CUET UG is March 12.

Two schools closed down in SWKH village, students sent home
MAWKYRWAT, March 6: Two schools in Mawthawpdah village under Mawkyrwat C&RD Block, South West Khasi Hills, viz. Mawthawpdah Government Lower Primary School and the Mawthawpdah Presbyterian Upper Primary School, were closed down by a group people and the students were sent back to their homes. The students along with the teachers were forced to vacate the school premises on Monday, while classes had just resumed after elections. Secretary of the village, Sparlindro Lyngdoh, told mediapersons that the reason behind closing down the Mawthawpdah Presbyterian Upper Primary School was lack of clarity. He claimed that earlier the school belonged to the Shnong, but later it turned out that it was managed by the Mawthawpdah Presbyterian Church. With regard to the Mawthawpdah Government Lower Primary School, Lyngdoh said it had to be closed down because the school building was destroyed without the knowledge of the people of the village and the students were shifted to the SSA building. The village secretary has demanded a clarification from the concerned authority on the aforementioned issues.
