SHILLONG, March 6: Heavy traffic jams took a toll on road users on Monday as Shillong bore the brunt of drills one day ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit for which elaborate traffic arrangements have been made.
The PM accompanied by Union Home Minister and other central leaders will arrive in Shillong for the oath-taking ceremony of Conrad Sangma as the Chief Minister and other cabinet ministers on Tuesday.
To make matters worse, the special session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly held for the swearing in of the MLAs also affected the regular flow of traffic.
As part of the drills, the Shillong Traffic Police stopped movement of vehicles on different roads. Monday’s traffic snarl was obnoxious as beelines of vehicles reached Laitkor from the city.
Some schoolchildren are currently giving their board exams and concern is running rife among the parents as students were stuck in the traffic jam for 2 hours after returning from their schools on Monday.
