Editor,
The proceedings in the current Budget Session of the Meghalaya Assembly gives an impression that Meghalaya is Shillong and Shillong is Meghalaya. The fifty-nine elected MLAs need to look beyond the confines of Shillong and bring up issues and solutions for the entire state. Regarding the issue of school buses, the option of schools running buses must be made for schools in the entire state. In fact the management of many of the private schools in the Garo Hills and Tura in particular in Tura have been running their own buses for a couple of decades. These schools have the experience of running school buses for years.
I believe the Govt of Meghalaya must make this generous offer to the schools here in the Garo Hills too. As far as schools in Shillong are concerned, with the exception of BK Bajoria school and BDW school none of the others are keen to make their students use school buses. This offer must be made to all schools and not to the reluctant ones only. Meghalaya has completed fifty one years as a state and it’s high time the Government looks beyond Shillong and sheds this Shillong centric way of functioning.
Yours etc.,
Tyrone D’Brass,
Tura.
