NONGPOH, March 24: The headmen from Ri-Bhoi have urged all the legislators from Meghalaya to unanimously oppose any possible implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Meghalaya.
The appeal comes following an executive committee meeting, which was organised by the headmen from the district, under the umbrella of Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong, Ri-Bhoi, in Umsning on Friday.
Following the meeting, the headmen’s body also announced its support for all church leaders who had previously opposed any possible implementation of the UCC.
Speaking to the media persons, general secretary of the headmen’s body, PB Sylliang, said that they are against the implementation of the UCC due to the apprehensions that it would have negative impact on the culture and identity of tribal people in the state.
He said that since UCC is a universal law, it would jeopardise the unique cultural and social practices of the tribal people.
The body also expressed hope that the issue would be discussed at the ongoing Assembly session.
Meanwhile, the body also urged the state government to provide special consideration for land registration to the poor families in Meghalaya, especially the ones in the border areas.
