Awareness prog in city promotes nutritional benefit of millets

SHILLONG, March 28: In commemoration of the International Year of Millet-2023, funded by NABARD Regional Office Shillong Meghalaya, the Social Service Centre organised a state-level awareness programme on millets at Moreau Institute of Integral Training (MIIT), Dhankheti, recently. The programme aimed at raising awareness among the general public about the nutritional content and health benefit that one can attain by consuming millets, and promote its large scale production to enhance food security and improve the livelihood of farmers.
Cabinet Minister Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh was the chief guest, besides guest of honor Dr Prabhu Dutta Sahoo, GM Director of NABARD, BK Sohliya, Executive Adviser of the Meghalaya Farmer’s (Empowerment) Commission (MFEC), president of the Social Service Centre, Archbishop Victor Lyngdoh, and others.
The Health and Family Welfare Minister promised to assist the organisation in popularising organic farming.

Eat Right Millet Mela
Ampareen, meanwhile, inaugurated the two-day Eat Right Millet Mela, International Year of Millet 2023, at Malki Ground on Tuesday. The Eat Right Millet Mela was organised by the Commissionerate of Food Safety, Government of Meghalaya.
Speaking on the occasion, she expressed satisfaction to witness the participation of young entrepreneurs and millet cultivators from across the state to gain and share knowledge and experience among one another about the various values of millets.
Lyngdoh thanked the United Nations for recognising and reviving millet farming.
In Meghalaya millet cultivation has been keenly integrated to the culture of the people of the state.
