NONGPOH, April 19: The Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner has issued an advisory with a slew of guidelines for the general public in view of an unusual rise in temperature in the district.
According to the DC, the public has been advised to take precautions such as avoiding going out in the sun, especially between 12 noon and 3 pm.
“It is recommended to drink sufficient water, even if not thirsty, and wear lightweight, light-colored, loose, and porous cotton clothes. Protective goggles, umbrella/hat, shoes, or chappals can be used while going out in the sun. A damp cloth can also be used on the head, neck, face, and limbs to keep the body cool,” the advisory said.
People have also been advised to avoid strenuous activities or working outside during the hottest parts of the day. “Those who need to travel should carry water and avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated soft drinks, as they dehydrate the body. High protein food and stale food should also be avoided,” it said. “It is recommended not to leave children or pets in parked vehicles and to seek medical help immediately if one feels faint or ill. ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, buttermilk, etc., can help to re-hydrate the body. Keeping animals in the shade and giving them plenty of water to drink is also advised,” the advisory added.
People have also been asked to use curtains, shutters or sunshades, and to keep windows open at night to keep homes cool. “Fans, damp clothing, and taking a bath in cold water frequently can also help,” it said.
“Schools are advised to avoid outdoor activities and ensure that the above dos and don’ts are followed. In case of an emergency, people can contact the District Emergency Operations Centre at the DC’s Office, Ri Bhoi, or the Office of the respective Block Development Officers,” the advisory said.
