Shillong, April 23: Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma created history during the IPL 2023 match against Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Rohit Sharma, a right-handed batter scored 44 runs off 27 balls, but it was in vain as his team fell short by 13 runs. Rohit managed to knock four boundaries and three sixes during his time at the crease. With his third six of the match, he made history by being the first Indian hitter to reach 250 sixes in the lucrative league.
On the final ball of the fourth over, thrown by Arshdeep Singh, Rohit struck his first six of the match. He then backed it up with another maximum on the fourth ball of the following over, bowled by PBKS interim captain Sam Curran. The right-handed batter, who leads India in sixes in ODIs and T20Is, became the 250th player to reach that milestone on the third ball of Rahul Chahar’s ninth over.
Rohit played his 233rd game in the IPL league on Saturday and amassed 250 sixes, which ranks third among all batters.
Only Chris Gayle and Ab de Villiers have managed to hit more sixes than Rohit in the IPL’s history. De Villiers comes in at No 2 with 251 big hits in 184 runs, trailing only Gayle at the top of the chart with 357 maximums in 142 games.
Before Rohit surpasses De Villiers’ record and climbs to No 2, it is only a matter of time. MS Dhoni, who has 235 maximums to his credit, and Virat Kohli, who holds the third-place spot with 229 big hits in 229 IPL games, are the Indian batters with the most sixes in the IPL, after Rohit.
