Matter of pride that state’s first NLU materialised within 10 months: CJ

TURA, April 29: Chief Justice of High Court of Meghalaya, Justice Sanjib Banerjee, on Saturday said that people of Meghalaya should take pride in the fact that the process of the establishment of the first National Law University of Meghalaya has materialised within a short span of 10 months.
Addressing an outreach programme on National Law University, Meghalaya, the Chief Justice also expressed his gratitude to the state government for its support and collaboration.
The programme was organised in Tura for the principals, teachers and students of higher secondary schools of West Garo Hills.
Addressing the gathering, Justice Banerjee, who is also the Chancellor of NLU Meghalaya, informed that the first curriculum will be rolled out on July 10.
He also mentioned about the fee structure of the courses available at NLU Meghalaya and that grants that would also be provided to the economically weaker sections of the society.
The Chief Justice also urged the teachers and students to pass on the message to others and, at the same time, invited the students to apply for the course and pursue legal studies.
Informing about the advancement of technology in the last few years, the Chief Justice said that technology has changed the world, and the same is also now being used in courts in the form of virtual appearances, live-streaming of court proceedings, et al.
Mentioning the various responsibilities one carries after attaining adulthood, Justice Banerjee then shared his personal experiences.
Revealing that the best part of his life was during his school days, the Chief Justice said that childhood days are the days where one can spend a carefree life.
He then acknowledged the presence of West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani by calling him the real hero for his achievement as B-Tech and M-Tech in Biotechnology from IIT Kharagpur, following which he pursued his Masters in JNU, New Delhi, and finally joined the Indian Administrative Service.
During the program, the Chief Justice also distributed the smart kits or community computer kits to different schools, which is an initiative of Community-Led Landscape Management Project (CLLMP) and is funded by the World Bank.
A representative from CLLMP Project demonstrated the smart kits for the benefit of the teacher and students.
The Chief Justice also held interactions with the teachers and students and replied to the queries raised by them.
Others who were present on the occasion include The Commissioner and Secretary, Education Department, Pravin Bakshi; Controller of Examinations, MBOSE, Tura, TR Laloo; Executive Chairman, MBoSE, Tura, Ambrose Marak; Registrar General, High Court of Meghalaya, E Kharumnuid, heads of various departments, et al.
