City school shines in Science, Commerce

SHILLONG, May 9: The students of Laban Bengalee Boys’ Higher Secondary School (LBBHSS) walked away with the top honours in science and commerce streams of this year’s Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate examinations, the results of which were declared by the Meghalaya Board of School Education on Monday.
Arnab Dutta of LBBHSS secured the top position in the Science stream with a total of 483 marks and letters in English, physics, chemistry, mathematics and computer studies.
In the commerce stream, Rishab Purkayastha of LBBHSS secured the first position with 484 marks and letters in English, mathematics, business studies, accountancy, entrepreneurship and economics.
Steffi Niza W Snaitang of St. Edmund’s HS School bagged the second position in the science stream with 477 marks and letters in English, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and alternative English.
Eshita Bhattacharjee of St. Anthony’s HS School was placed third with 469 marks and letters in English, mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer studies and alternative English.
Subam Das of LBBHSS was fourth with 467 marks in the Science stream.
St Anthony’s HS School dominated in the bottom half of the merit list in the science stream except for the 6th position which went to Rahul Das of RK Mission Higher Secondary School, Sohra. He secured letters in English, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and alternative English.
The other students of St Anthony’s securing positions include Soumitra Jha (5th), Sargam Datta and Sharmin Khongsit (joint 7th), Sangam Paul (8th), Bishwadeep Nath (9th) and Samjanai Synnah (10th).
Akshat Das of LBBHSS secured the fourth position by securing 459 marks and letters in English, mathematics, business studies, accountancy, economics and entrepreneurship.
Seven students from St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School were among toppers. They are Akshaat Poddar (2nd), Satakatshi Das and Sneha Paul (joint 3rd), Deepak Sethia (5th), Nengneiching (6th), Phibalmati Marwein (7th), Nangkhraw Laloo (8th), Kashish Sangma and Eleazer Lyntep (joint 8th).
Others on the merit list include Nanghraw Laloo (8th) of Mawsynram Border Area Higher Secondary School, Mawsynram; Rakhi Kumari (9th) of Alpha English Higher Secondary School, Nongpoh; and Dalairi Nongrem (10th) of Anderson Higher Secondary School, Upper New Nongstoin.
The science stream had 78.84 pass percentage. It was 79.31% in the commerce stream.
Altogether 3,304, including 1,982 females and 1,322 males, appeared in the exams as regular students, while 331 others, including 152 males and 179 females, appeared as non-regular students in the science stream. A total of 2,866 of them cleared the exams.
In the commerce stream, 2,383 students, including 2,255 regular (1,218 males and 1,037 females) and 128 non-regular (72 males and 56 females) appeared and 1,890 of them cleared the exams.
St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School Principal, Fr. Anthony Kharkongor was ecstatic. He also lauded LBBHSS for running away with the top honours in both streams.
It is good that there is competition among schools for good results, he said.
The St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School celebrated the achievements of its students by organizing a jam session. Fr. Kharkongor declared that the school will remain closed on Wednesday “in view of the outstanding results”.
