MAWKYRWAT, May 11: Two houses-cum-shops at Rangblang Pombriew market, 30 km from Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills, were gutted in a fire that broke out on Wednesday evening.
Sources informed that albeit the cause of the incident, which took place at around 6:45 pm, could not be ascertained, it is suspected that the same might be caused by short circuit.
The houses that were destroyed in fire belonged to one Kity Thongni and her daughter Olinda Thongni, both residents of Rangblang Pombriew village.
The damage has been estimated at over Rs. 10 lakh.
A video doing rounds on social media also showed an explosion induced by the fire.
Five people, including a minor, have reportedly suffered injuries in the explosion.
The fire was initially tamed by the villagers and was eventually doused by the fire services, which arrived late.
