Shillong, May 15: In two separate occurrences in Tamil Nadu, as many as 13 persons consumed spurious alcohol after which they died.

After consuming illegal alcohol, nine people died in Marakkanam in the Villupuram district and four people died in Maduranthakam in the Chengalpattu district.

Due to negligence, four police officers have been placed under suspension. Nine people who are accused of manufacturing and supplying fake alcohol have been arrested by the police after 57 complaints against them were filed.

Police are currently looking for any indication that the two incidents are connected.

According to the officials, “currently, more than two dozen people are receiving treatment and are said to be doing well.” N Kannan, the inspector general of police for the north, speculated that the victims may have consumed spurious alcohol mixed with an etanol-methanol mixture.

“Earlier, five people were hospitalised in the Chengalpattu district. During treatment, four of them passed away. There has been an autopsy. Ammavasai, the accused in the event in Chengalpattu, has been taken into custody. In both cases, a few suspects are evading capture, and special teams have been assembled to find them. Alcohol used for industrial purposes has been employed in both instances. In both districts, three inspectors and four sub-inspectors have been suspended for neglect of duty, according to Kannan.
