Eviction drive: Around 50 shops dismantled in Upper Shillong

SHILLONG, May 22: Around 50 temporary shops were dismantled by the Forest department at Upper Shillong for alleged illegal construction along the highway.
The eviction drive was conducted on Monday morning in the presence of police personnel and magistrates.
Heavy-duty machineries like JCB were deployed to dismantle these shops, most of them wooden structure.
It is alleged that none of the shop owners were given any warning by the Forest department before the eviction.
The owners of these shops have demanded compensation from the government for the losses they sustained.
