SHILLONG, May 30: Former chief minister and TMC leader, Mukul M. Sangma on Tuesday said that the existing job reservation policy should be implemented in letter and spirit.
Talking to The Shillong Times on the ongoing controversy over reservation policy, he appreciated the founding fathers of the reservation policy for coming up with an exhaustive and acceptable one.
“Is the reservation policy the main issue confronting everyone today or is it the inadequate creation of jobs and opportunities?” he asked.
Admitting that government jobs are limited, Sangma said that the state cannot deviate from reality and should focus on providing justice to job-seeking youths.
He said some TMC legislators gave personal opinions on the reservation policy, which is not the stand of the party’s Meghalaya unit.
Pointing out that the main issues for the state’s youths today are inadequate jobs, livelihood opportunities and sustainable livelihood outside the government sector and the creation of government jobs, Sangma said that the government should be clear about its priority and that the policymakers should not deviate from collective responsibility.
“Every issue or policy will have some people favouring it while others are against it, but it is important to arrive at a decision that is acceptable to all,” he said.
“If there are loopholes in the implementation of a policy, these should be corrected and not manipulated,” Sangma said, indicating the reservation policy has benefitted different communities.
The former CM insisted that the Khasis, Garos and all other communities in the state must come together for resolving any issue affecting the state.
