Cancer survivors of Meghalaya share their stories, journey
SHILLONG, June 1: Cancer survivors on Thursday shared their stories and journey, from their diagnosis to treatment, during a programme to observe National Cancer Survivors Day here. According to a statement here, the programme was organised by the State Cancer Society of Meghalaya and the Oncology Department, Shillong Civil Hospital, at the premises of DAE-Civil Hospital Cancer Wing. During the programme, the cancer survivors also urged the ones undergoing treatment to have a positive mindset and approach to overcome the disease. The programme was also attended by Principal Secretary of Health department, Sampath Kumar, Head Radiation Oncology, Shillong Civil Hospital, Dr A. Mawlong, among others.

Traditional healers from Ri-Bhoi sensitised on TB, HIV/AIDS
NONGPOH, June 1: As many as 34 traditional healers from Umling block were on Wednesday sensitised on tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS during a programme, organised by the Office of the District Tuberculosis Officer, Ri-Bhoi, in collaboration with the Piramal Foundation. During the programme, District TB Officer Dr. E Kalwing explained tuberculosis in detail, its history, causes, signs and symptoms, treatment, as well as the goal of India in combating and eliminating the disease by 2025. She also urged the traditional healers to extend support to the anti-TB campaign. The Cluster Programme Manager (CPM) of DISHA, J Pohtam, on the other hand, touched upon the topic of HIV/AIDS, and spoke about its route of transmission, the preventive methods and the treatment options for the people infected by the virus. He also spoke about the law that protects the people living with HIV/AIDS from stigma and discrimination.

Police intercept Guwahati-bound vehicle, confiscate heroin
SHILLONG, June 1: East Jaintia Hills police on Thursday intercepted a Guwahati-bound vehicle and recovered 926.40 grams of heroin. According to a statement here, following a tip-off that one Abdul Aziz Barbhuiya (35) was proceeding from Kalain towards Guwahati in his vehicle (AS-24-D-2838) with contraband items, a team of ANTF and personnel of Lumshnong Police Station set up a naka at Tongseng near HP petrol pump, NH-06, and intercepted his vehicle. A search was subsequently conducted during which 74 soap boxes containing heroin were recovered and subsequently seized. Barbhuiya was subsequently apprehended while the vehicle as well as a mobile phone was confiscated. In another incident, the ANTF East Khasi Hills on Wednesday apprehended one infamous drug trafficker Aiyesha Khatoonalias Pahari at ISBT, Mawiong. Three soap cases containing 37.28 grams of heroin and a mobile phone were seized.
