Shillong, June 13: With the formidable cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ swiftly approaching Gujarat, it is expected to make landfall near the Jakhau port in Kutch district on Thursday, June 15. The intensifying weather conditions have prompted the authorities to enforce section 144 in Kutch until Friday, June 16.
In preparation for the cyclone’s arrival, active measures are being taken to safeguard the population and minimize potential damage. The evacuation of residents and the suspension of port activities are being swiftly implemented, as stated by officials.
As a precautionary measure, Mumbai has also taken steps to ensure the safety of its inhabitants. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed two additional teams in the city. These teams are stationed in the western suburb of Andheri and the eastern suburb of Kanjurmarg.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) highlighted that ‘Biparjoy’ has the potential to become the longest-lasting cyclone ever recorded in the Arabian Sea. If it follows its current trajectory, it will be the third cyclone to make landfall in Gujarat during June since 1965. The lifespan of Cyclone Biparjoy, which formed over the southeast Arabian Sea on June 6 at 5:30 am, has already surpassed seven days and 16 hours.
In anticipation of the cyclone’s impact, a comprehensive evacuation plan has been put into action. Starting Tuesday, June 13, people residing within a 10 km radius from the coast in Kutch-Saurashtra will be relocated to safer areas. Approximately 7,500 individuals residing in low-lying coastal regions have already been relocated.
