NONGPOH, June 21: Peeved at the state government over its indifferent approach towards Umsohlait Police Station which falls under the Mawhati constituency, the Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF) Mawhati Circle has demanded a dedicated building for the police station. It has given one week to the government to do so or face consequences.
The Umsohlait PS was inaugurated in 2017 by the former Home Minister, (late) HDR Lyngdoh.
However, seven years since its inauguration, the police station continues to operate out of three small rooms within the premises of the Village Employment Council (VEC) of Umsohlait village.
The federation asserted that the situation exemplifies the apathetic and negligent attitude of the state government towards the people of Mawhati.
Previously, the federation had also submitted a letter to the former Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi, RM Kurbah, requesting her intervention to establish a full-equipped police station with a building of its own. However, the appeals fell on deaf ears as no action had been taken so far.
Furthermore, the federation has given the government a one-week ultimatum to address the issue. Failing to do so, the group has warned the government of protests including the locking of the police station.
The federation firmly believes that the current condition of the police station renders it useless for the people of the Mawhati.
The group remembered former MLA Julius Dorphang, who is currently in jail serving a 25-year sentence, commending him for his effort to establish a police station in Mawhati during his tenure as an MLA.
However, after his defeat, the state government neglected the upkeep and development of the police station, leaving it unchanged since its inauguration.
