Petrol, diesel prices see slight rise after 50 paise rise on tax
SHILLONG, June 22: Prices of petrol and diesel in Meghalaya have risen slightly after the state government increased tax on fuel prices. Albeit the state government increased the tax on petrol and diesel prices by 50 paise, some petrol pump owners informed that the prices of petrol have not yet increased. With the hike, the government is now charging Rs 13 per litre as tax on petrol, while it charges Rs 6 per litre as tax on diesel. As on Friday, the prices of petrol and diesel in Shillong were Rs 97.47 per litre and Rs 85.71 per litre respectively. Meanwhile, a petrol pump attendant, while sharing his views about the petrol prices, said that both the state and central governments are charging quite a substantial amount of taxes on petroleum products. He added that petrol and diesel, which should have been sold at Rs 30-40 per litre, are being sold for Rs 90-100, thanks to different taxes levied on them. It may be mentioned that on an average, all the petrol pumps in Shillong sell around one lakh litres of petrol and diesel every day.
