Shillong, June 25: On the occasion of FIH Inclusion and Diversity Day, the Indian Men and Women’s Hockey Teams shared their thoughts on the #HockeyEquals campaign.
PR Sreejesh, a seasoned player and Khel Ratna awardee, highlighted the unifying power of sports, saying, “The FIH Inclusion and Diversity Day reminds us that we are #HockeyEquals. Regardless of gender, ethnicity, physical or intellectual ability, sexual orientation, or age, hockey treats everyone equally, and inclusion is an integral part of the sport.”
Harmanpreet Singh, Captain of the Men’s Team, emphasized the diverse backgrounds within the team, stating, “We come from different cultures, religions, and spiritual beliefs, but hockey brings us together. Diversity is our strength, and we take pride in being part of a sport that offers equal opportunities to all.”
Vandana Katariya, a Padma Shri awardee and prominent player in the Indian Women’s Hockey Team, echoed the sentiments of her male counterparts. She shared her experience, saying, “When I started playing hockey, girls were not allowed to venture out of their homes. It was not considered normal for girls to play sports, wear shorts, or attend practice sessions. There was discrimination, but over the years, this perception has changed significantly. It’s wonderful that FIH, through Inclusion and Diversity Day, is spreading awareness about gender discrimination and other issues globally.”
Savita, Captain of the Indian Women’s Team, fully supported the initiative, stating, “FIH has taken a commendable step. Sports bring people together on a single platform, transcending discrimination.”
The players expressed their pride in being part of a sport that sets an example for future generations. They acknowledged the challenges they faced in overcoming stereotypes during their early days, but they believe that with the support of Hockey India and FIH, promoting the right values will be easier for future generations.
These sentiments were echoed by the accomplished goalkeeper, Savita, who led the Indian team to a historic Bronze at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
