Shillong, June 28: At least seven Muslim students attending the government medical college in Thiruvananthapuram have approached the college principal with a request to be allowed to wear long sleeve scrub jackets and surgical hoods instead of the traditional hijab while inside the operation theatre.

The college principal has responded by stating that he will convene a meeting with surgeons and the infection control team to discuss the matter. He further mentioned that the decision regarding the students’ request would be made by the team.

The students, who made the appeal, explained that they are required to cover their heads at all times due to their religious beliefs. However, wearing hijabs inside the operation theatres is not feasible for them.
