Agatha reviews implementation
of central schemes in EGH
TURA, June 28: Tura MP Agatha K Sangma on Wednesday reviewed the implementation of Centre-sponsored schemes in East Garo Hills during the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting held at the Williamnagar Circuit House. The review took place in the presence of Cabinet Minister Marcuise N Marak, Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal and officials from various line departments. Informing that there are 67 roads sanctioned under the PMGSY in the district covering 234.911 km out of which only 40 per cent has been completed, the MP urged the concerned department to pull up the erring contractors who are unable to complete the work within the timeframe. The other schemes reviewed during the meeting included the JJM and Swacch Bharat Mission under the PHE, MHSSP and PM-BHIM under the Health and Family Welfare, Poshan Abhiyan under the ICDS, PMKSY under the Soil and Water Conservation, AAY and PHH under Supply, National Food Security Mission and RKVY under Agriculture, PMMSY under Fisheries, RMSA and Mid Day Meal under the Education department, etc.

Rongara subway gives way
amidst heavy rainfall
BAGHMARA, June 28: In another setback for the upcoming National Highway between Baghmara to Rongara in South Garo Hills, a subway connecting the two parts of the town of Rongara, close to the border with Bangladesh, gave way, owing to incessant rains in the region. From pictures available, while the entire structure was not washed away like last year, major damage has been caused. The subway was recently completed by the NH company tasked with construction of the section. Last year, the major timber bridge, which was replaced by the new subway this year, was washed off, leading to major issues as connectivity was completely cut off due to extreme rains.

Meeting on demand to revise prices of transport, others facilities
JOWAI, June 28: The East Jaintia Hills Truck Owners’ and Transporters’ Association (EJHTOTA) on Tuesday met the officials of All Jaintia Hills Cement Manufacturing Association (AJHCMA), East Jaiñtia Hills, demanding revise on the prices of transport and others facilities. The meeting was held at Topcem Cement Plant of Thangskai Village in East Jaintia Hills. EJHTOTA president, Kyrchan Dkhar, said the Association was left with no other choice but to call on the officials of the factories with their demand. He said the Association wants the factories to provide a reasonable rate for them. Speaking to the media person, AJHCMA president and head of Topcem Cement, RK Pareek, said the meeting was inconclusive. Informing that the meeting was sudden and without required paperwork, he said, “So we requested the truck owners to provide an official letter to discuss the matter further.”

Halfway home comes up in WJH
JOWAI, June 28: West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner BS Sohliya on Wednesday inaugurated a halfway home for rehabilitation of persons living with mental illness. Located at Sabahmuswang, West Jaintia, the halfway home is run and managed by the Society for Urban & Rural Empowerment (SURE) through funding from the Department of Directorate of Social Welfare. Prior to the inauguration, a meeting was held during which the DC lauded Halfway Home for their dedication and selflessness in providing their level best care for the needy. Director of Social Welfare department, CD Lyngwa, on the other hand, appreciated Sabahmuswang village for providing land to set up the halfway home.

Appeal to revoke doctor’s transfer
TURA, June 28: The Human Rights and Anti-Corruption Youth Power of India has written to the Commissioner Secretary of Health department, urging that the earlier notification relating to the transfer and posting of a doctor from the TB Hospital in Tura be recalled. The notification is in connection with the transfer and posting of a Specialist Dr Bandi Koksi Sangma of District TB Hospital Tura to the Tura Civil Hospital. “Dr Sangma is the lone doctor who has been treating TB patients for many years and there is no other specialist to look after TB patients in the entire Garo Hills. If he is transferred, it will be the TB patients who will suffer,” it said.
