SHILLONG, July 1: Almost seven months after their inauguration, three units of the Ganol hydropower plant have been synchronised with the grid.
Tweeting this on Saturday, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the synchronisation has raised the estimated annual production from Ganol to 65 million units.
The project is expected to generate 22.5 MW of power.
“This marks a significant milestone in our journey towards self-sufficiency of power,” the chief minister said.
Ganol was among several projects Sangma had inaugurated in January ahead of the Assembly polls.
Ganol is the only hydropower project in the Garo Hills region of Meghalaya and its commissioning is likely to ease the power crisis the state is facing.
Electricity generated from hydropower projects such as Myntdu Leshka, New Umtru, Umian, and even Ganol is not enough to rescue the state from long hours of load-shedding, energy experts said.
