Ri-Bhoi mishap leaves duo dead

NONGPOH, July 1: Two people were killed on Friday night after their two-wheeler reportedly collided with a truck on National Highway 6 at Umsamlem. The trucker, however, fled the scene.
Upon receiving a distress call, local law enforcement authorities arrived at the accident site and found the truck (UP76K8582) as well as the bodies of the duo.
They were later identified as Pynshailang Wahlang and Banialambha Lyngdoh, both residents of Umnget village.
According to eyewitnesses, the duo was travelling towards Shillong.
On reaching Umsamlem, the two-wheeler abruptly veered over the median divider and entered the opposite lane. It was after this it collided with the oncoming truck, which was heading towards Assam.
Meanwhile, the families of the victims were informed by the local authorities that both Wahlang and Lyngdoh were believed to have died instantaneously due to the impact of the collision.
Their bodies have been, meanwhile, shifted to the morgue room of Nongpoh CHC for further formalities and necessary actions.
Blockade after truck overturns in Ri-Bhoi
Meanwhile, a truck transporting an excavator overturned near Umket Bridge, triggering a road blockage and leaving several local people stranded on the Bhoirymbong-Kyrdem road.
The incident, which occurred around noon on Saturday, caused widespread disruption in the area.
According to sources, the overturned truck created a barrier on the road, trapping individuals and public vehicles.
This forced commercial vehicles to reroute and rearrange passengers to reach their destinations.
The timing of the incident further compounded the inconvenience as it coincided with the weekly Umroi market.
Although no casualties were reported, the overturned truck posed inconvenience to the locals, obstructing the public road.
Meanwhile, efforts are currently under way to clear the road and restore normalcy in the affected area.
Local authorities have also urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution and comply with instructions given by the police until the situation is resolved.
