Shillong, July 6: A tragic incident unfolded at the Gujarat Adani Institute of Medical Sciences (GAIMS) in Bhuj, where a second-year female MBBS student was discovered hanging in her hostel room. The student, identified as Devangi Patel from Ahmedabad, is believed to have taken her own life.

The motive behind Patel’s decision to resort to such a drastic measure remains unknown. In response, the police have initiated an investigation to determine the cause. The suicide reportedly occurred on Wednesday.

Following the completion of the necessary funeral arrangements, the police will question Patel’s family members to gain insights into the case. As part of their preliminary inquiry, authorities have also commenced interviewing Patel’s classmates, friends, and faculty members at the institute.

Law enforcement suspects that Patel ended her life sometime between 7:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. She was promptly taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:09 p.m.

According to the B-division police, Patel resided on the first floor of the girls’ hostel. During a routine check, a faculty member noticed that Patel’s room was locked from the inside during class hours, which raised concerns. After receiving no response when knocking on the door, the faculty member resorted to breaking the window, only to discover Patel hanging from the ceiling fan.

The Gujarat Adani Institute of Medical Sciences is a self-financed medical college and multi-specialty hospital jointly established by the Gujarat government and the Adani Foundation in Bhuj.
