Shillong, July 6: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday said that the North Eastern region and Sixth Schedule Areas will be protected as far as the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country.
“I have been made to understand that the implementation of the UCC will not impact the tribals or Schedule Tribe areas,” Sangma said while addressing the gathering after launching of the college bus of the Nichols Roy Bible College at Sohryngkham in the presence of KHADC CEM, Pyniaid Sing Syiem.
Stating that they have all been speaking about the UCC, he said that there is ongoing discussion about a move on the part of the Centre to implement it.
According to him, as a political leader who is part of this country and also being a tribal is a matter of huge concern for everyone.
“I have come out openly about this issue. After my statement there has been a lot of communication with leaders from the Centre about the UCC,” Chief Minister said.
Talking about the architect of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, late Rev JJM Nichols Roy, Sangma said that he had listened about the work which late Rev Nichols Roy had done.
‘The work he had done so many years back even today is protecting us and giving that kind of identity which is allowing us to maintain our unique culture and uniqueness. In one way giving an umbrella of protection over us in spite of so many challenges being faced,” Chief Minister said
Sangma however observed that even late Rev Nichols Roy would not have imagined that the work he had done would have this kind of impact on people’s life in the North East of the work he had done.
It may be mentioned that the college bus which was formally launched was funded under the Chief Minister Special Development Fund (CMSDF) 2022-2023 and was recommended by the KHADC CEM who is also the local MDC of Sohryngkham constituency.
