Tura, July 8: Residents of Moulakandi in the plain belt of West Garo Hills (WGH) have written to the Executive Member (Revenue) of the GHADC seeking the appointment of a new Goanbura (headman) following the demise of the previous one.
In a letter to the CEM, the villagers informed that Abubakkar Siddique, the former Goanbura passed away a few weeks ago and the village was now without any one in the role.
The villagers have now sought an election for the post after some people from the village allegedly have been going door to door seeking signatures so that they can approach the GHADC and seek appointment as the new headman without a general meeting or elections.
“This is being done without the consent of a majority of the village (population of 6000). We held a meeting in the premises of the Moulakandi Eid-gah where no consensus could be reached due to the fact that there were 20 people interested. As such we find that the best way to resolve this will be through an election conducted by the GHADC under your supervision,” stated the memo to the EM.
