Reach, teach and learn: M’laya holds its first Science Hackathon

SHILLONG, July 21: A State Level Science Hackathon-2023 under “Reach Teach and Learn: A Learning Enhancement Programme” was held here on Friday at Sankardev College Auditorium, Lumshatsngi. The programme was organised by Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan SEMAM under Education Department, in collaboration with the Bhoomi Educational Consultancy, New Delhi.
Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma was the chief guest on the occasion. Advisor to the Education department, HM Shangpliang said the efforts of the students from far-flung areas are greatly appreciated.
This kind of science competitions give ample opportunities to students hailing from villages to see the realities and prepare themselves to cope up with the problems of today and tomorrow, he said.
Deputy State Project Director, Dr. Andrew Warjri, welcomed the chief guests and stated this kind of event has been organised for the first time in the state.
Director of Bhoomi, Manoj Kr. Mishra presented the Reach Teach Learn programme and its various initiatives in the learning enhancement programme in the state, especially designed for rural government-run schools.
Addressing at the gathering, the chief guest said, “We must go to expand whatever knowledge we have learnt and oriented by modifying on our own by not memorising but understanding, sharing and with the motivation like with the knowledge we have to serve others using the possibilities that science and technology offers us.
“This Science Hackathon is an eye-opener for the young children and its impact is very important for us to see for the first time which we have witnessed today. We must let it happen in different parts of the state. Our students are in need of such intervention and opportunities so that they can bring out their skills and their talents.”
The programme included the participation of 18 students shortlisted among 150 students who participated in quiz and then submitted their respective project presentations..
The students shared their presentations on relevant topics like modern agriculture and light pollution. The students who were not selected were also awarded certificates for participation.
Sangma complimented the students with awards and mementos and expressed gratitude to the students for having participated in the event. He extended heartiest greetings to schools, Education Department and organisers Bhoomi Educational Consultancy to conduct this type of programme in the state annually.
Out of 14 students, Jeremy Mejop Rynghang, Govt Boys’ Hr. School, Shillong secured the second runners-up, Elvareen Lyngdoh Kynshi from Little Star English Medium School secured the first runners-up and Nidhi Ghosh from Pine Mount Govt. School became the winner of the day.
To conclude the occasion, Evarist Myrsing, senior programme manager, Bhoomi Educational Consultancy thanked all the dignitaries, jury members, teachers, parents, representatives from Samagra Shiksha Department, and students for being part of the event.
