SHILLONG, July 22: As a revitalised police force looks forward to performing its duties with robustness and vitality in Meghalaya, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong minced no words while asking the 1,010 new recruits in the Police department to resign if they are thinking of lobbying to get a preferred or easier posting.
“As long as I am in-charge of the Home department, I will not allow anyone to engage himself or herself in such a lobby. I know that there are many who tried to reach out to the people in power to seek their help to get a posting of their choice,” Tynsong said addressing the new recruits during a function at SIPAC, Mawkasiang, on Friday where the appointment letters were distributed.
He said the new recruits should be ready to work wherever posted. He said the government recently issued a new office memorandum relating to transfers and any manipulation relating to transfers and postings will not be entertained.
Tynsong disclosed that ahead of interview, some had reached out to him over the phone as well as personally with the request if he could help them as he is the Home Minister.
“I told (them) on their face that even if it were my own son or my wife, I would not be able to help them. I know there is a perception among many of our friends that the process of recruitment can be manipulated at any point but that is not true at all,” he said.
Tynsong further said that all the new recruits landed their jobs purely based on merit and not because the CM, the Deputy CM or somebody else helped them. He appealed to the recruits to work hard.
The understaffed Meghalaya Police received a shot in the arm with these appointments.
The 1,010 recruits were selected from a pool of 1.59 lakh applicants. Seven of them completed engineering (BTech/BE), 28 are post-graduates and one did BPharm. Twenty-six secured jobs from the sports quota. Of the recruits, 77.83% are male, while 22.17% are female.
