Kuki-Zo group offers help in fight against drug menace
SHILLONG, Aug 2: In view of some drug peddlers from Kuki-Zo community being apprehended for their alleged involvement in clandestine drug trade in the city, the Kuki-Zo Community in Shillong has constituded the ‘Kuki-Zo Anti-Drugs Committee Meghalaya’ to help the state in effectively tackling the drug menace. The Meghalaya Police has alos been apprised of the formation of the anti-drug committee, according to a statement. Earlier, an emergency meeting of representatives of different civil society organisations within the Kuki-Zo community – a conglomerate of several tribes of Thadou-Kuki, Paite, Hmar, Gangte, Vaiphei, Zou, Simte and Tiddim-Chin – was held at KWS Church, Law-U-Sib, Shillong, which resulted in the formation od the anti-drug wing of the community. The group rued that few delinquents within the community have brought about a bad reputation to the Kuki-Zo people residing in Meghalaya.

Bid to preserve Khneng embroidery
SHILLONG, Aug 2: A training-cum-production centre for preservation of ‘Khneng Embroidery’ was launched on Wednesday by C&RD Minister AT Mondal. The centre, which is supported by Meghalaya State Rural Livelihood Society (MSRLS) and USHA International Limited, has been established in Mustoh village under Shella Bholaganj Block. Khneng Embroidery is a 200-year-long tradition that is unique to Meghalaya and is also the only known traditional embroidery technique of the state. It may be mentioned that there are agencies as well as departments which are making efforts to revive the skills. MSRLS through its CSR partnership with USHA International Limited has developed a plan to strengthen women self-help groups, engaged in the intricate artwork, by integrating it into the contemporary market demand through means of capacity building and training for addressing the supply chain.

The clubhad also kept items such as candles, keychains, aprons and sling bags on sal, whcih were made by children of the Ferrando Shelter Home.
