SHILLONG, Aug 5: Welcoming the Supreme Court’s stay on Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his “Modi surname” remark, Opposition Leader and Congress MLA, Ronnie V Lyngdoh termed the order as not only a victory of one individual (Rahul Gandhi), but a victory of the whole country.
Hailing the relief provided by the Apex Court, Lyngdoh said that the truth has prevailed, justice has been delivered; democracy has won and the Constitution has been upheld.
The Supreme Court stayed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in the Modi surname case on Friday, paving the way for a Lok Sabha reinstatement.
The Congress leader was disqualified earlier in March this year after a Surat court handed him two years jail term.
According to Lyngdoh, the way the case was handled by the judiciary in Gujarat was questionable and that even the highest court in the country noticed it.
“For the people of India, this has come as something to be happy about; we now know that there is still the judiciary to protect the justice of the citizens,” Lyngdoh said.
He also pointed out that many institutions in the country have been subverted and compromised even as he added that they still have hope in the apex court.
