SHILLONG, Aug 8: Meghalaya and Assam officials will conduct a joint visit to the disputed Langpih area in West Khasi Hills district to meet stakeholders, local representatives, and residents before finalising the border pact, Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh said on Tuesday.
Lyngdoh, who is the chairman of West Khasi Hills regional committee, led a delegation from Meghalaya for a meeting with Chandra Mohan Patowary, chairman of the regional committee from Assam, in Guwahati.
“The discussions were fruitful and there was a spirit of mutual accommodation,” Lyngdoh said after the meeting.
He said there is a distinct possibility that villages whose residents have been voters of Meghalaya and receiving benefits of development activities undertaken by the Meghalaya government would be transferred to Meghalaya through the active participation and resolution of the Assam government.
Lyngdoh also informed that a second round of the joint meeting would be held after Independence Day.
KHADC MDC and member of the regional committee, Bajop Pyngrope said a joint team from the two states will conduct a survey and submit a full list of villages with their allegiance to either of the state in the next meeting.
“Now, we will identify villages which are pro-Meghalaya and those that are pro-Assam and accordingly finalise the list in the next meeting,” Pyngrope said.
He also said the next meeting will be held in Shillong after which the joint inspection of around 52 ‘disputed’ villages in the Langpih sector will be undertaken. (With PTI inputs)
