Shillong, August 14: Recent data reveals that Instagram’s Threads app has experienced a substantial decline of 79% in its daily active users on Android. This trend coincides with the growing popularity of Elon Musk’s X, a platform that has seen increased usage amidst Musk’s public conflict with Meta Founder Mark Zuckerberg.
News agency IANS reported that estimates from analytics firm Similarweb indicate that the Threads Android app reached its peak with 49.3 million daily active users worldwide on July 7. However, by August 7, this number plummeted to 10.3 million.
Initially, daily active users spent an average of about 14 minutes on the Threads app globally, with the US experiencing notably higher engagement at nearly 21 minutes on July 7. However, by August 7, these numbers had dwindled to a mere 3 minutes.
Comparatively, X (formerly Twitter) boasts more than 100 million daily active users on Android alone, who consistently spend around 25 minutes per day on the platform.
Despite a strong start in July, Threads, Meta Platform’s response to the former Twitter, could not sustain its initial momentum. The app’s active user count surged in its early days as new users explored the platform and interacted with others, but this enthusiasm quickly waned.
In the US, peak usage of Threads reached 2.3 million daily active users on July 7, but this number dwindled to around 576,000 by August 7.
While Threads captured significant active user time in the US upon launch, it has fallen behind X (Twitter) since then. The content offered on Threads lacks the captivating appeal that drives X users to engage, such as discussions and comments on posts critiquing Elon Musk, the owner of X.
The report suggests that Threads has the potential to become a notable alternative to Twitter, but it must provide users with compelling reasons to remain engaged and return to the platform.
