Shillong, August 15: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma of Meghalaya reiterated his government’s commitment to resolving the longstanding inter-state border dispute with Assam.
Speaking at the main Independence Day event at the Polo Grounds in Shillong, Sangma highlighted the historic Memorandum of Understanding signed with Assam last year, marking the initial step towards resolving the border dispute.
IANS reported that Sangma emphasized the formation of regional committees to address differences in specific areas, such as Langpih, Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur, Desh Doomreah, Block 1 & Block 2, and Psiar-Khanduli.
Sangma reported positive progress in formal tripartite peace talks involving the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) and both central and state governments.
The Chief Minister also unveiled plans to generate five lakh employment opportunities within the next five years, focusing on strengthening the primary economy sectors like agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, sericulture, and fisheries.
Meghalaya’s high-value products such as Lakadong turmeric and Khasi mandarins have entered overseas markets, contributing to improved prices for farmers.
Sangma highlighted the success of the FOCUS program, supporting rural households and producer groups. The Chief Minister emphasized the significance of border trade and the state’s efforts to enhance border infrastructure.
Furthermore, Meghalaya stands out with its well-funded Early Childhood Development Mission, reflecting the state’s dedication to holistic development.
