SHILLONG, Aug 16: Acting on credible intelligence, the state police on Monday busted a newly-floated militant outfit called the ‘National Liberation Council of Nongkyndong’ (NLCN), allegedly formed by some Khasi-Jaintia youths.
Police conducted an operation and arrested seven members of the outfit from various locations in the Eastern Range, including one juvenile member.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Eastern Range), Davis Nestell Rangsa Marak said the arrested persons include the self-styled chairman, commander-in-chief, general secretary and area commanders of West Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills, recruiter and record-keeper of NLCN and three cadres.
Marak said the intention to float the new militant group was to wage war against the government and to commit unlawful activities like procurement of arms and ammunition, extortion, recruiting armed cadres, training of armed cadres, establishing armed terrorist camps and conspiring to commit terrorist acts.
“The inputs also indicated that NLCN had tied up with other militant outfits of Nagaland and was supposed to send the first batch of cadres for armed terrorist training to Nagaland on August 17,” Marak said.
According to him, the known locations of these terrorist operatives were searched and several materials including mobile phones and other incriminating documents were recovered from their possession.
“The efforts to arrest other members of NLCN are ongoing and the investigation of the case is continuing,” Marak added.
He further said that a criminal case has been registered at the Crime Branch police station, Eastern Range, Shillong, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
