Shillong, August 21: A student from Jadavpur University in West Bengal reportedly attempted suicide due to alleged “police harassment” amidst an investigation into the death of a first-year undergraduate student, India Today has reported.
The incident comes after the demise of a student who allegedly fell from the second-floor balcony of his hostel on August 9. His parents filed a case, claiming he was a victim of ragging.
In the ongoing investigation, 12 individuals, including current students and alumni, have been arrested in connection with the student’s death. Amid this probe, a hostel resident has purportedly faced distress due to police scrutiny.
Sources have indicated that the police confiscated his phone for forensic analysis to identify any electronic evidence linked to the alleged ragging of the deceased student. This action reportedly caused the student to panic, resulting in his attempted suicide.
University authorities have taken steps to address the situation. High-ranking officials engaged in dialogue with the affected student and arranged for his counseling with a psychological counselor. They also communicated with the student’s family to discuss the matter and offer support.
